United Kingdom: Army, RAF and Royal Navy tests
The Army Cognitive Test (ACT)
Candidates applying to the British Army sit the Army Cognitive Test, usually shortened to ACT. It is the online successor to the British Army Recruit Battery, the BARB test, which the Army used for decades before moving its early-stage testing online. The RAF Airman Selection Test

United States: the ASVAB and PICAT
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, the ASVAB, is the entrance test for all branches of the United States military, from the Army and Marine Corps to the Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard. It is one of the most widely taken aptitude tests in the world.
The ASVAB is a multi-part battery covering subjects that typically include arithmetic reasoning, mathematics knowledge, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, general science, electronics information, mechanical comprehension, and automotive and shop information. Most candidates now sit the computer-adaptive version, where the test adjusts question difficulty based on your answers.
Two things matter about your results. First, four of the core sections (arithmetic reasoning, mathematics knowledge, word knowledge and paragraph comprehension) combine to produce your AFQT score, the Armed Forces Qualification Test score. This is reported as a percentile between 1 and 99, showing how you performed relative to a national reference population, and it determines whether you are eligible to enlist at all. Each branch sets its own minimum. Second, various combinations of the other sections produce line scores that determine which military occupational specialities you qualify for. Canada: the CFAT
Applicants to the Canadian Armed Forces sit the Canadian Forces Aptitude Test, the CFAT. Candidates for the Australian Defence Force complete aptitude testing as part of the assessment day traditionally known as the YOU Session (Your Opportunities Unlimited). The core of it is general ability testing, which measures verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning, and candidates typically also sit a mathematical ability test, with additional job-specific testing for roles such as pilot or air traffic control. Worked example questions
The fastest way to understand these tests is to try the questions. Here are two practice items in the style of military aptitude tests, with full explanations.
Example 1: numerical reasoning
A supply convoy must deliver equipment to a forward base 156 miles away. The convoy travels at an average speed of 48 miles per hour and departs at 07:30. At what time does it arrive?
A) 10:15
B) 10:45
C) 11:15
D) 11:45
Answer: B, 10:45.
Time equals distance divided by speed: 156 divided by 48 is 3.25 hours. The trap is the decimal. 3.25 hours is not 3 hours 25 minutes; 0.25 of an hour is 15 minutes, so the journey takes 3 hours 15 minutes. Adding that to a 07:30 departure gives 10:45. Option A punishes rushing the division and option C punishes reading 0.25 hours as 25 minutes, which is exactly how these tests separate careful candidates from hasty ones. Under time pressure, the discipline of converting decimal hours to minutes correctly is worth a mark every time it appears.
Example 2: abstract reasoning
A sequence of frames each shows an arrow inside a square. From one frame to the next, the arrow rotates 90 degrees clockwise, and the number of dots in the corner of the square alternates between two and three. Frame 1 shows the arrow pointing up with two dots. What does Frame 5 show?
A) Arrow pointing up, two dots

Answer: A, arrow pointing up with two dots.
Work each rule separately. Rotation: from Frame 1 to Frame 5 there are four transitions, and four rotations of 90 degrees make 360 degrees, a full circle, so the arrow is back where it started, pointing up. Dots: the count alternates 2, 3, 2, 3, 2 across the five frames, so Frame 5 shows two dots. Both rules point to option A. Two habits make questions like this fast and reliable. First, count transitions, not frames: five frames means four changes, and miscounting this is the most common abstract reasoning error. Second, resolve each rule on its own before looking at the answer options; the wrong options here are built from single-rule mistakes (three dots if you miscount the alternation, down or right if you miscount the rotation), so a candidate who checks both rules independently is immune to all of them.
What skills do military aptitude tests measure?
Across every country and branch, the same core abilities come up again and again.
Numerical reasoning. Arithmetic, percentages, ratios, speed and distance calculations, and reading data from tables and charts. The military context is constant: fuel loads, timings, distances, supplies.
Verbal reasoning. Understanding written information quickly and accurately, from vocabulary and comprehension through to judging what does and does not follow from a passage. Orders and technical documentation demand exactly this.
Abstract and non-verbal reasoning. Spotting rules and patterns in shapes and sequences. This is the closest thing to a pure measure of learning ability, which is why forces lean on it so heavily for assessing trainability.
Spatial reasoning. Mentally rotating objects, reading maps and visualising in three dimensions. Central to the CFAT and to aircrew and technical selection everywhere.
Mechanical and electrical comprehension. Levers, gears, pulleys, circuits and forces. This is the one area where knowledge, not just reasoning, is tested, and it is heavily weighted for engineering and technical trades.
Work rate and accuracy under time pressure. Every one of these tests is strictly timed. Speed with sustained accuracy is, in effect, a skill being measured throughout.
How to prepare for a military aptitude test
Aptitude test performance is not fixed. Familiarity with the question types, sharpened basics and a practised time strategy reliably move scores. A structured approach looks like this.
- Start with a benchmark. Take one full practice test cold and note your score in each area. This tells you where the marks are cheapest to gain, and it stops you spending your preparation time on things you can already do. The free practice test is the natural place to start.
- Rebuild mental arithmetic. Most military numerical questions ban calculators, and speed is the differentiator. Drill times tables, percentages, fractions and the distance, speed and time triangle until they are automatic. Ten minutes daily beats one long weekend session.
- Learn the pattern library for abstract reasoning. Rotation, reflection, alternation, counting sequences and combined rules cover the large majority of abstract questions. Once you have seen each rule type a dozen times, you stop solving from scratch and start recognising.
- Read actively for verbal sections. Practise summarising short passages in one sentence and distinguishing what a passage says from what it merely suggests. Verbal reasoning rewards precision, not reading speed alone.
- Cover mechanical basics if your test includes them. A few hours on levers, pulleys, gears and simple circuits pays off disproportionately, because these questions are learnable in a way pure reasoning items are not.
- Practise under timed conditions. Untimed practice builds understanding; timed practice builds the test-day skill. Learn your pacing, and learn when to make a decision and move on rather than defending one hard question at the cost of three easy ones.
- Review every wrong answer. The explanation of a question you got wrong is worth more than five questions you got right. Understand the error, then look for it in your future practice.
- Protect the final 48 hours. Sleep, eat properly and do only light review the day before. These are tests of processing speed, and processing speed is the first casualty of a bad night's sleep.
